The materialistic items I treasure most

Moving abroad forces you to compress your life into 100 pounds and 2 suitcases. After having done so, I realized that there are only a few things that I truly treasure in my life:

1) 2 letters from loves past and a beautiful picture of one of my most memorable moments during an unforgettable motorcycle trip in SK.

2) Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance + my sticky notes/highlights (book courtesy of my former supervisor, notes courtesy of my innate curiosity)

3) A Tibetan singing bowl recently given to me by one of the most beautiful people I've had the chance of meeting.

4) A copy of my favorite cd (in mp3 form) - Cafe del Mar 25th Anniversary

5) My memories (perhaps not materialistic but easily my most treasured item)

Lesson? I have 97 pounds of disposable clothes, electronics and toiletries.

Howdy! Just found your blog courtesy of Dragonfly--she suggested we might have similar plights (I am a BC resident studying medicine in Ireland).

Congrats on the move and starting medical school. I fear we have a long and bumpy road ahead on the way back to Canada but hopefully we'll be able to make some changes to a system that clearly needs some shaking up.

Good luck getting settled and getting started! :)

Yay for getting down under safely. My move from the States back to Indonesia and then from Indonesia last year was hectic as well. Have a good time in Oz and good luck with med.

Thanks for the cheers guys!

Albinoblackbear - yeah, I agree, it's going to be difficult to say the least, but determination and adaptability will see us through any foreseeable difficulties (I have a feeling that being flexible will be key to getting home/post-grad training). I'm glad to hear of people being so open to share ideas and help one another out. Power in numbers, right? I've added your blog to my RSS feed :)

MedicallyEthically - thanks! Moving is, in understated terms, incredibly hectic! I'm glad that it's over though and I can finally start settling in (albeit I still need a place to live, a phone, internet, etc but these things will come with time). You're in 2nd year are UoW now, right? Hope it's going well!

Hi Dr. Polar Platypus,

Your blog has been a great help to my quest to get into medical school. I have recently been given the no go light at medicine in Canada and it has got me looking abroad. I have done my research and think that Australia may be right for me. I am wondering if I may ask so bluntly what your stats were applying into medicine in Australia or alternatively what you make of my chances?
I am currently in my 4th year of Chemical Engineering at Queen's and have a 3.65 (roughly the same over all 3 years) according to OMSAS but my last term was 3.95. My MCAT was a 30O (THIS IS SPARTA!!!). I am wondering if I should apply for early decision at Flinders or wait for my 4th year marks and apply in the general stream. I feel that I can keep my GPA in the 3.8-3.9 range for my last year. Thanks in advance.

Dragonfly - agreed. Moving is as fun as a kick to the groin from that angry woman at the club with ridiculously high heels who thought that she was better looking than she actually was... and I just drunkenly had to point that out.

Tom - check your SDN PM
